When a
distance runner decides to race in a marathon, it is
important that the distance is exact! Mapping 26.2 miles is
a task the USA Track and Field takes very seriously. For the
past several days representatives from the Run for the Red
Marathon have been working with William J. Belleville on the
course. Mr. Belleville is a regional course certifier and
measurer for the USATF and also a Road Running Technical
Council member.
Mr.
Belleville has spent the past several days riding through
some of the most beautiful scenery in Pennsylvania on his
bicycle. All along the way mapping and charting each and
every turn and curve. He plots out utility poles and makes
note of landmarks to ensure the distance is correct.
May 7, 2006
is the day distance runners from Pennsylvania and beyond
will take part in the officially certified 26.2-mile
marathon course. The race begins at 8am at the Clear Run
Elementary School on Route 611 in Coolbaugh Township (Near
Tobyhanna). The course then travels through Mt. Pocono onto
PA Routes 940 and 191 through Paradise Valley, Henryville,
Analomink, and eventually into Stroudsburg, ending at the
Stroudsburg High School stadium. Check out the website for
course details and elevation chart.
The Pocono Mountain Run For The Red
Marathon is a huge undertaking for the local American Red
Cross of Monroe County and its volunteers. Robert Werts,
Race Director said. We are excited by all the interest in
the marathon and we hope to see hundreds of runners take
part in this race to benefit the local chapter of the
American Red Cross. All the money raised through the
Marathon will go directly to help the local disaster relief
program.
